CHILDREN’S BOOK WEEK ACTIVITIES

NOV. 12 – 16, 2007

A “Barnyard of Books” was the theme for the 2007 celebration of Children’s Book Week at Jena Elem. School . Each grade visited the “farm” which consisted of many outdoor activities.  Each class at JES enjoyed a hayride, a petting farm, and the “book barn”. where every child in the school received a free book and bookmark – compliments of JES Library and Jena Elem. School .

Students also visited “Scarecrow Alley” and the “Pumpkin Patch” and had a class group picture made with Cow, Pig, Duck, and Chicken – the characters from our special farm stories.

Children also visited the “Feedsack Shack” at canteen and received theme-related treats such as “Cowabunga Chocolates, Pig’s Favorite – Popcorn, and Duck Pond Punch!”

Special stories by Doreen Cronin were read to the children during their library class.  These stories were:  Click, Clack, Moo;    Giggle, Giggle, Quack,   Duck for President,  and Dooby, Dooby, Moo.

The characters from these stories performed special dances and gave speeches at the academic Pep Rallies which were also held this week.  After listening to each character’s speech and campaign promises, the children then voted on which one they wanted to run the farm. Pre k and Kindergarten chose Duck!  First through Third chose Cow!

Many thanks to our special book characters:

Mr. Doug Hallmark as Farmer Brown, and some talented Goodpine Middle School 6th graders as Cow, Pig, Duck, and Chicken;

Also many thanks to our JES aides and resource personnel;

Our students will have these special memories for a lifetime thanks to the hard work of these people.

A special thanks to our parent volunteers also! We appreciate your help and involvement!

If you are interested in class group picture of your child with the animal characters, send a note to your child’s teacher.

DECEMBER ACTIVITIES AT JES LIBRARY

This month we have been reading special Christmas stories such as Henry and Mudge and A Very, Merry, Christmas ;    A Star So Bright – a story with special twinkling lights; and Merry Christmas Big Hungry Bear!  We have added more special storybook friends to our reading centers in the library.  Mudge and Fudge are 2 special stuffed dogs the children love to sit and read with;  We also have the “Reading Rainforest” which has a big palm tree in it;  We have added 2 stuffed animal parrots to our tree. The children love to sit under the canopy of the leaves and read.  Clifford the Big Red Dog stays in our “red center” and Cookie Monster stays in the “blue reading center”.  Curious George usually stays on the beanbags and we also have special books and puppets at the “puppet center”.  The children love coming to the school library and reading with these “storybook friends”.

Dear Parents, Students, and Friends of Jena Elementary.

CHILDREN'S BOOK WEEK ACTIVITIES

October

Jena Elementary School Library hosted “A Bookfair Blizzard!” on September 17-21st. We had some real “COOL” books! Family night was held on Tuesday, September 18, 2007, with Clifford the big Red Dog and Sleeping Beauty as our special guests. Clifford and Sleeping Beauty signed autograph cards, posed for pictures with students, and passed out bookmarks and color sheets. Please contact us if your child took a picture with Clifford and you would like a copy of it. You will be able to purchase it for a small fee to cover the ink/printing costs. Thanks to all of you for making our bookfair a huge success. We appreciate all you do for our school!

September 24-28

The Great Fall Passage of Monarch Butterflies! – This is what our story was about during the last week of September. Children enjoyed learning about the monarch butterfly which passes through our area during September and October. The monarchs travel hundreds of miles to Mexico where they spend the winter months. You might want to check out some websites about monarchs such as www.monarchwatch.org The children have really enjoyed looking for monarchs and other butterflies in the school garden after they learned about them in the story.
